دانشگاه آلتو (Aalto University) دانشگاهی با بیش از یک قرن تجربه در کشور فنلاند می باشد که از ادغام سه دانشگاه Helsinki School of Economics(تاسیس ۱۹۰۴) و Helsinki University of Technology  (تاسیس ۱۸۴۹) و University of Art and Design Helsinki (تاسیس ۱۸۷۱) در سال ۲۰۱۰ شکل گرفته است. دولت فنلاند ادغام سه دانشگاه را به منظور ایجاد نوآوری انجام داده است. این دانشگاه از ۶ دانشکده و با بیش از ۱۹۰۰۰ دانشجو و ۵۰۰۰ کارمند تشکیل شده است که سومین دانشگاه بزرگ فنلاند می باشد.

کمپس (Campus) یا پردیس اصلی دانشگاه آلتو در اوتانیمی (Otaniemi) شهر اسپو (Espoo) قرار دارد که در آن دانشکده های مهندسی فعالیت دارند، به همراه دو دانشکده دفتر مرکزی در هلسینکی (Helsinki): دانشکده بیزینس و دانشکده هنر، طراحی و معماری. همچنین، دانشگاه در واحدهای زیادی خارج از هلسینکی فعالیت دارد مانند میکلی (Mikkeli)، پوری (Pori) و واسا (Vaasa).

We are looking for a doctoral candidate to the field of Individual Modelling of Brain Stimulation at the Electromagnetics in Health Technologies group (http://eea.aalto.fi/en/research/sahkomagnetiikka_terveysteknologiassa/) of Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation (EEA), Aalto University. The work will be done under guidance of Assistant Professor Ilkka Laakso.

The task of the candidate is to develop and apply numerical methods for modelling non-invasive brain stimulation, including transcranial electrical and magnetic stimulation. Methods include electrical or electromagnetic modelling using the finite-element method, as well as various tools for medical image processing, visualization and statistical analysis. We will also be obtaining MRI scans using Aalto University’s neuroimaging facilities.

The research aims at realizing automatic individualized computer simulation tools, which will help to reveal the physical mechanisms of non-invasive brain stimulation. The results will improve the efficiency and accuracy of non-invasive brain stimulation and allow novel individualized stimulation protocols. The main focus of the research is on experimental verification of computational models. Initially, we will analyse experimental data obtained from international collaborators.

We will offer the candidate close guidance and opportunities for interdisciplinary domestic and international collaboration. The candidate will also have the chance to use the methodology to develop novel electromagnetic technologies for other health care applications.

An ideal candidate has a Master’s degree in electrical or biomedical engineering, physics, computational science, or a related field, and good programming skills in languages such as Matlab/C and good written and spoken (English) communication skills. Prior knowledge on bioelectricity, numerical modelling, brain stimulation, or medical imaging is considered as an advantage. Good grades from undergraduate studies are appreciated.

The position is fixed-term and filled initially for 1 year with an option for extension until the end of 4-year PhD studies. The salary is determined according to the salary system of Aalto University (starting salary approximately 2500 euros/month).
